“In the winter of 2013, I was in Fairfax, Virginia, in a dumpy motel and I was waiting for a meeting when I picked up the phone and it was one of our top referral partners in New York. They told me they had a great case to refer, but they needed me to meet with the client right away. I was in Fairfax, so I couldn’t do it, so we scheduled the meeting for a few days out. Basically, it was a young guy who was in a coma, a vegetative state, and it was simply a matter of meeting with the family, getting to know them and having a retainer signed. At the end of the meeting, I handed my book to the client. They said they would think about it. A couple of days later, I got a call and the client said that they were hiring my law firm. This is a multi-million-dollar case. I asked them what was the basis for their decision because I knew they were interviewing a number of different firms. They said that during the two days that they had my book, they leafed through it and they noticed that there were testimonials in the very front of the book from different attorneys who were complimenting my abilities as an attorney. They said, ‘If all of these attorneys think so highly of John Fisher, that’s got to be the right attorney for our case.’ About a year and a half later that case was resolved for close to $4 million. That is not a case that I would have had if not for the book.
The book gives me staying power unlike anything else. So even when I’m not there, this book is sitting on our client’s coffee table, they might be leafing through it, they might be looking at the testimonials but it’s giving me staying power that nothing else would. Just within a matter of months within printing this book, it resulted in a multi-million-dollar case with a very substantial legal fee. When people ask me what is the return on investment of a book, for me, that ROI was hundreds of thousands of dollars within just a few months within printing the book. This book has been invaluable.
