Hey Siri, is voice search really a thing?

We thought about inserting audio from Siri into this message but we figure you probably hear her voice enough on your own smartphone already.
And if you’re using voice search, you’re not alone.
According to a recent collection of data analyzed by agency search firm, 99 Firms, here are some jaw-dropping stats that Siri based her answer on:
- According to Google, 20% of all searches are voice.
- 31% of smartphone users worldwide use voice tech at least once a week.
- 50% of all online searches will be voice-based by the end of 2020.
- 30% of all web browsing sessions will be done without a screen by 2020.
- 55% of households are expected to own smart speaker devices by 2022.
- Global voice commerce is expected to be worth $40B by 2022.
As the internet of things continues to proliferate, this will become even more prevalent as we tell various devices – from our washing machines to refrigerators – what to research and order as we use them.
As we head toward 2021 it’s a good time to audit your website to ensure it is voice search friendly. Here are three things to focus in on:
- Make sure your content is conversational
In addition to the concise keyword phrases that have been used traditionally to optimize websites, focus on how someone would phrase a search query when speaking. The key is to think through how your audience speaks about your business, services or products, which is often different from how they write. Traditionally someone might type in Google “voice SEO tips.” If they are searching through a virtual assistant on their mobile device their question might be phrased, “Who can help me with voice SEO?” To generate optimized questions that are most often used, we recommend using a tool called Answer the Public. - Add that FAQ page back to your website
We know this feels a bit like back to the future but the FAQ page on your website is more important than ever when it comes to voice SEO. Use common questions that populate for your search on Answer the Public as the header for each question on your FAQ page. When crafting questions, anticipate the way they would be asked in a conversational phrase. Answer your question below the header using clear and concise language.
- Make sure your website doesn’t take too long to load
Google voice search ranks websites that load quickly higher in their algorithm. It should take no longer than three seconds to load anything that is visible to the eye on a landing page. To help reduce load time, ensure any media on your website such as video or photos are compressed and optimized. It’s also important to keep your website responsive and use strategies such as website caching to improve speed.
